Extra Divers Nunukan
Nunukan’s dive centre ‘Extra Divers’ is located directly on the resort’s jetty on the east side of the island. It offers outer reef and house reef diving daily from 7:30am until 5:00pm. The dive sites can be reached with a short Tuk Tuk boat ride. The Tuk Tuk remains on site and brings the divers back again to the jetty.
Dive Service
The dive centre is equipped with dive equipment from Aqualung (BCD, reg, mask and fins). It also offers 70 x 12L aluminum tanks with DIN valves, Suunto dive computers and 3mm wetsuits.
Nitrox is available. Advanced notice should be given to the dive centre if you wish to dive on Nitrox (at extra fee).
Open Water, Advanced and some specialty courses are available on the island. Courses are conducted in German and English. Certification is by SSI and PADI standards. Advance notification must be provided.
Dive Boats
The dive spots around the house reef are approached with two wooden local boats, our Tuk Tuk´s, the rides take about 1-10minutes. The day trips are conducted with a modern dive boat built of fibreglass with 2 x 115 hp four stroke engines. On the boats are oxygen and first aid equipment .
Local Tuk Tuk boats take divers to the desired entry and provide also the pick up after the dive. Together with the guests, the dive shop does the dive planing in the evening for the next day.
Dive area
The majority of the diving on the island takes place on the house reef. Half day trips to dive sites such as “East Wall”, “South Maratua” and “Big Fish Country” are also offered at a small additional surcharge. Full day trips are also on offer to Sangalaki and Kakaban (min. 4 divers required).
The house reef is dominated by a sloping wall about 40m deep, which leaves lasting impressions with every diver. At almost every dive you can expect turtles, bumphead parrot fish, groupers and eagle rays. Leopard sharks, reef and nurse sharks are also not uncommon. Macro lovers will find many different species such as nudibranchs, leaf fish, pygmy seahorses and much more!
Maratua Atoll: The dive sites around Nunukan bribe their biodiversity and the food-rich currents from the Pacific Ocean coming. The dive sites around the Maratua atoll consist of an intact reef, flat and sloping cliffs. One highlight "the Channel", also known as "Big Fish Country", is certainly one of the best dive sites in Borneo. Due to strong currents you can expect almost at every dive large fishes like sharks and big schools of barracudas.
Kakaban: About 70% of Kakaban consist of a brackish lake, surrounded by a thin strip of dense jungle. During the surface interval you have the unusual opportunity to snorkel with various types of non-stinging jellyfish. At the "Barracuda Point" regularly reef sharks, leopard sharks and school of barracudas are seen. With a little luck you also can spot hammerhead sharks.
Sangalaki: Known worldwide for its manta encounters that leave these dive sites every diver's heart beat faster. Mantas can be seen almost throughout the whole year and an encounter with the "eagle of the sea" is an unforgettable event. But the intact coral reefs and the countless encounters with turtles - come to lay their eggs on the island - these dive sites make it an absolute highlight.
